MAREITTA — Sophomore Kirsten Lightel led the Ohio Northern softball team to a split with Marietta on its opening day of Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Polar Bears claimed game one 3-1 and fell in game two 6-5.
Northern moves to 11-9 overall, while Marietta moves to 9-9.
Lightel got the call in game one, pitching a complete game and surrendering just one hit in the 3-1 decision.
In the opening game, Junior Megan Hupp would give ONU the early 1-0 lead in the first inning as she scored on a fielders choice from senior Amanda Lahti.
Northern would post two more runs in the top of the fifth inning as Hupp would once again reach home following an RBI from freshman Kylie Asmus.
Lahti would pick up her second RBI of the contest later in the inning as she hit an RBI single to left field, scoring sophomore Jenna Hollar.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rachel Montgomery would break-up Lightel's no-hitter as she hit an RBI single to left field scoring the Pioneers only run of the contest.
Lahti would finish the game 1-for-4 with two RBI's.
Northern would take the early lead in game two as Hupp would once again plate the games first run following a Marietta miscue in the top of the fourth inning.
Sophomore Gia Saturday would record a clutch hit for ONU later in the inning as she cleared the base paths with an RBI double to right center scoring both Asmus and Hollar.
Marietta would respond in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs on three hits.
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh inning, the Polar Bears would score two more runs following another Pioneer miscue on a hit from Lahti cutting the deficit to 6-5.
Lahti would later reach scoring position before getting gunned down at home following a single from freshman Kylie Dickman.
Northern returns to action Saturday April 2 as they travel to John Carroll, first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
