CLERMONT, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team opened the 2016 season with a clean sweep on day one of its annual spring break trip to Clermont, Fla.
The Polar Bears defeated Houghton (N.Y.) 8-0 in five innings to open the trip, followed by a 2-0 shutout of Concorida Moorehead (Minn.).
Northern improves to 2-0 overall on the season.
The Polar Bears were led on day one by freshmen pitcher Kaitlin Surdej and Hailee Loughman.
Surdej led the Polar Bears past Houghton, pitching a one hit shutout in route to the five inning 8-0 victory.
Loughman also had an impressive day against Houghton as she homered in the bottom of the second to put ONU on top 2-0.
In game two, sophomore Kirsten Lightel led the way recording 12 strike outs in seven innings of work.
This was the first meeting between ONU and Houghton and the sixth meeting between the Polar Bears and Concorida, with the series now being tied at 3-3.
Ohio Northern returns to action Saturday as they take on Augustana (Ill.) at 9 am, followed by Johnson St. (Vt.) at 11 am. Both games will be held at the National Training Center in Clermont Fla.
