ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team swept Wilmington 10-2 and 8-0 an Ohio Athletic Conference double header Tuesday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in OAC play, while the Quakers fall to 5-19, 1-5.
In Game 1, freshman Kirsten Lightel went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs at the plate and threw a 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts to earn the win.
She then threw a 2-hit shutout with six more strikeouts to improve to 9-1 on the season in the circle and went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead ONU in Game 2.
She finished the day 2-0 with 12 strikeouts and only five hits allowed in 10 innings and was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored batting.
In the opener, Wilmington used four walks and a hit to score twice in the top of the first and take a 2-0 lead.
But ONU answered with a unearned run in the first and two more unearned runs in the second to grab a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Megan Hupp had an RBI single and Lightel followed with a 2-run single as the Polar Bears extended their lead to 6-2.
Junior Amanda Lahti hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to score freshman Anna Martin to make it 7-2.
Northern scored three more unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and won the game due to the NCAA's 8-run rule with two out in the inning.
In Game 2, Martin led off with a bunt single and later scored on a ground ball by senior Kelly Sheridan to put ONU up 1-0 in the first inning.
The Polar Bears added four more unearned runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 5-0.
A sac fly by Sheridan and run-scoring hits by freshman Gia Saturday and sophomore Megan Hupp keyed the rally.
In the home half of the fourth, Lahti doubled and scored on a single by Sheridan, who then scored on a double by Saturday to out ONU up 7-0.
Northern won it in the fifth via the NCAA's 8-run rule on a sac fly by freshman Jenna Hollar.
The Polar Bears will return to action Friday with an OAC twin bill with John Carroll at Noon at the ONU Softball Field.
