Softball splits non-conference double header with Anderson (Ind.)

By: Andrew Korba

ADA -- Senior Bree Hiteshew and junior Kelly Sheridan each hit 2-run home runs as the Ohio Northern softball team split a double header with Anderson (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon.

Anderson (22-7) won Game 1 in nine innings 3-2 and ONU (18-17) won the second game 10-2.

Game 2 was called after five innings due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.

Sheridan now has six homers on the season, while Hiteshew has two.

In Game 2, the Ravens jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning.

Northern came right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, capped off by a 2-run single from Hiteshew, to take a 3-2 lead.

Hiteshew then blasted her home run in the third to make the score 5-2.

A RBI single from sophomore Anne Dreher in the fourth expanded the Polar Bears lead to 6-2.

In the fifth inning, Sheridan blasted her 2-run homer and senior Colleen Baliga laced a 2-run double to end the game.

Freshman Kirsten Burden picked up her sixth win of the season, by not giving up a earned run and striking out two batters.

In Game 1, Anderson scored a run in the first and second inning to open up a 2-0 lead.

The Polar Bears rallied in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.

With the bases loaded, Baliga hit a sac fly to left to score senior Carly McKenzie. The leftfielder's throw to the plate was up the line, allowing freshman Megan Hupp to score and tie the game at 2-2.

The Ravens would get a sac fiy in the ninth inning to take the 3-2 lead and grab the victory.

Freshman Paige Ordean (12-9), pitched all nine innings and struck out two.

Ohio Northern will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Capital in a OAC double header at 1 pm.
