ADA -- The Ohio Northern softball team got four base hits from senior Christin Miller and posted a 12-4, 6-1 double header sweep of Otterbein Wednesday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-14 overall and are 6-4 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Cardinals fall to 10-11, 3-7.
Miller went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI to lead Ohio Northern to a 12-4 victory in Game 1.
After OU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Northern answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Miller had a 2-run single and later scored on a passed ball in the inning.
Northern then took control of the game with a 5-run second inning.
Junior Jamie Westenkirchner and sophomore Amanda Lahti each had bases-loaded singles to make it a 5-2 game.
Senior Carly McKenzie scored on a passed ball, Miller had an RBI single and Lahti scored on an error to cap the rally.
ONU then added a run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a commanding 12-2 lead.
The Game was called in the fifth inning due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
Freshman Paige Ordean improved to 9-8 with a complete-game 6-hitter.
In Game 2, senior Colleen Baliga went 2-for-2 with an RBI and freshman Kirsten Burden threw a 6-hitter to pace the Polar Bears.
Otterbein scored in the top of the first to go up 1-0, but again ONU answered quickly.
In the bottom of the second, freshman Tessa Topp singled home freshman Paige Hendershot, Miller scored on a wild pitch and junior Kelly Sheridan doubled home Topp and Northern led 3-1.
Baliga singled home McKenzie in the home half of the third to make it a 4-1 game.
Northern added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Topp scored from third base on an RBI groundout from Sheridan and freshman Megan Hupp came home to score on a throwing error to the plate in an attempt to get Topp.
Burden (4-6) had two strikeouts and allowed only one run to earn the win.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday when they play host to Muskingum at the ONU Softball Field.
