TIFFIN — The Ohio Northern softball team remained undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-2 and 10-4 sweep of Heidelberg Wednesday afternoon at Hedges Boyer Park.
The Polar Bears improve to 17-5 overall and are 8-0 in OAC action, while the Student Princes fall to 12-12, 2-5.
ONU is now riding a 7-game win streak and has a two-game lead on the field in its quest for a fourth consecutive OAC Regular Season title.
Senior All-American Jackie Mangola drilled a 2-run home run to key a 3-run seventh frame in the nightcap, while freshman Kelly Sheridan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, 3 RBI and three runs scored to spark ONU's 14-hit attack in the opener.
In Game 1, Sheridan got Northern on the board with an RBI double in the top of the third. She eventually scored on a single by junior Ashley Sujkowski as ONU plated three runs in the frame to take a 3-0 lead.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the seventh, Sheridan had a 2-run double to start a 3-run rally and give the Polar Bears some breathing room and a 7-2 lead.
Junior Abbey Bensing improved to 7-3 on the year with the complete-game victory.
In Game 2, Mangola cracked her ONU career-record 43rd home run in the top of the seventh to give ONU a 9-4 lead.
With the score tied at 2-2, Northern scored five times in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by senior All-American Kimi Blewett, an RBI single by senior Cassie Gaye and a 2-run single by senior Katie Cretin.
Junior Katy Newman moved to 7-2 in the circle with a complete game win.
The Polar Bears will return home on Saturday for a 1 pm OAC double header with Mount Union at the ONU Softball Field.
