UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The Ohio Northern softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with John Carroll by scores of 4-5 and 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bracken Field.
With the split, the Polar Bears move to 12-6 overall, and 3-1 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks move to 13-5 overall, and 3-1 in the OAC.
junior All-American Jackie Mangola drilled a pair of home runs and finished the day 3 for 3 with 5 RBI and three runs scored to lead ONU.
In game two, the Polar Bears found themselves down 2-1 going into the fifth inning, before breaking out in the top of the inning with five runs.
With the bases loaded, junior All-American Jackie Mangola walked to bring in freshman Christin Miller.
Sophomore Ashley Sujkowski singled to bring in fellow sophomore Alia Brodie.
Junior Katie Cretin followed with her own RBI single, bringing in freshman pinch runner Carly McKenzie.
Junior Lisa Light singled in two more runners to cap off the five run inning.
Sujkowski brought in two more runs with a single in the sixth inning to put Northern up 8-2.
Sujkowski went 2-5 with three RBI's, while Light went 1-3 with two RBI's.
Sophomore Abbey Bensing improved to 3-0 on the season, giving up no runs in three and two-thirds innings of work.
The Blue Streaks came out aggressive in the first game, going up 1-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, Mangola launched a solo home run to bring the game even at 1-1.
After another JCU run in the bottom of the inning, Mangola blasted her second home run of the day to center field, scoring Miller, to put the Polar Bears up 3-2.
In the fourth inning, Miller lined a single to left field, bringing in Light and giving the Polar Bears a 4-2 lead.
JCU scored in the bottom frame of the inning to cut Northern's lead to 4-3.
A two run homer by Samantha Becker in the bottom of the sixth inning secured the 5-4 win for JCU.
Mangola led the Polar Bears offensively, going 2-2, with two home runs and three RBI's.
Northern returns to action on Wednesday at 3:30 pm as they travel to Denison for a non-conference double-header.
