ADA — Junior All-American Jackie Mangola broke ONU's single-season home run record, leading Ohio Northern to a 9-3 victory over Mount Union in Game 1 of an Ohio Athletic Conference softball double header Saturday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
Mount Union won the nightcap 2-0.
The Polar Bears move to 22-10 overall and 12-4 in OAC play, while the Purple Raiders move to 19-13, 11-5.
Mangola's 14th home run of the season, a 3-run shot in the bottom of the fourth, gave ONU a 9-3 advantage.
She bettered the previous record of 13 set last season by her and junior All-American Kimi Blewett.
Northern used a pair of home runs from sophomores Ashley Sujkowski and Katy Newman to score five times in the bottom of the second in Game 1.
Sujkowski got the Polar Bears off to a quick 1-0 lead in Game 1 when she blasted a solo home run to deep center field to lead off the bottom of the second frame.
Newman followed with her first career home run, a 3-run shot to left, to give ONU a 4-0 advantage.
Blewett doubled to left center to score freshman Christin Miller to make it 5-0.
Mount Union scored three times in the top of the fourth to pull within 5-3.
After Mangola's record-breaker made it 9-3, the Purple Raiders scored three times in the top of the sixth to pull within 9-6.
Junior Abbey Bensing pitched four innings to earn the win and improve to 5-0 on the season and Newman pitched the final three innings to earn her second save of the season.
In Game 2, Mt. Union scored twice in the top of the fifth to score the only two runs of the nightcap.
The Polar Bears will wrap up their regular season Sunday with a twin-bill with Wilmington at 1 pm at the ONU Softball Field.
With a pair of victories, ONU would win a share of the OAC Regular Season crown, would be the No. 1 seed and would play host to next week's OAC Tournament.
