ADA -- Sophomore Kim Blewett drilled two home runs in Game 1 and sophomore Cassie Gaye hit a walk-off home run in Game 2 as No. 8 Ohio Northern swept John Carroll 8-0 and 8-7 Saturday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-1 overall and are 2-0 in OAC play, while the Blue Streaks fall to 7-9, 0-2.
Blewett finished the day 4 for 6 with two home runs, a double and six RBI.
In Game 1, Blewett blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and followed that with a solo shot well over the center field fence in the bottom of the fourth, her fifth and sixth dingers of the season.
Her first home run staked ONU to a 2-0 lead and her second made it 3-0 Polar Bears.
Northern ended the game with a 5-run fifth inning, keyed by a 2-run double by senior Mandi Fought and a pair of RBI singles by sophomore Katie Cretin and senior All-American Tina Mangola.
Senior Cortney Cash threw a 4-hit shutout to improve to 9-1 on the season.
In Game 2, Gaye hit a 1-out, walk-off home run, her fifth homer of the year, to complete ONU's rally from a quick 6-0 deficit.
Sophomore Maggie Molnar (5-0) was outstanding in releif, not allowing a ball hit out of the infield and just one run in 6.1 innings of work to pick up the victory.
JCU batted around in the top of the first to take a quick 6-0 lead.
Northern battled back, scoring twice in the third and fourth innings to pull within 7-4.
Freshman Chrissy Rankin drilled her first career home run, a solo shot in to lead off the bottom of the sixth, to make it a 7-5 game.
Senior Katie Salay followed that with a triple to center and Fought blooped a double to left center to pull ONU within 7-6.
Blewett followed that with a sharp single to left to score Fought and tie the game at 7-7, setting up Gaye's seventh-inning heroics.
The Polar Bears will return to action Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at home against Denison at 3:30 pm at the ONU Softball Field.
