ADA -- Senior Cortney Cash threw a 3-hit shutout and sophomore Jackie Mangola drilled a pair of 2-run home runs as No. 6 Ohio Northern swept No. 13 Capital 1-0 and 9-1 in an Ohio Athletic Conference softball double header Friday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears run their win streak to 16 games and improve to 19-1 overall and 4-0 in OAC action, while the Crusaders fall to 13-5, 1-3.
Senior Mandi Fought also had a big day at the plate, going 6 for 7 with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored and an RBI.
In Game 1, Ohio Northern got its run when Fought led off the bottom of the third with a triple to left and scored one out later on a sharp single past the third baseman by sophomore Kimi Blewett to take a 1-0 advantage.
Fought finished the game 2 for 3 with a double and a triple to lead the ONU offense.
Capital threatened in the first and sixth innings, getting runners in scoring position, but both times Cash (11-1) worked out of the jam to keep the Crusaders off of the board.
CU ace Brittany Stefano also threw well, allowing only five hits, but suffered the loss to fall to 13-4 on the year.
In Game 2, sophomore Jackie Mangola hit a pair of 2-run home runs to stake ONU to a 4-0 lead.
She drilled her first 2-run home run in the bottom of the first, her fifth long ball of the season, to put the Polar Bears up quickly 2-0.
She hit another 2-run home run in the bottom of the third frame, again scoring Fought, to give Northern a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Maggie Molnar extended saw her streak end at 12.0 innings without allowing a ball to be hit out of the infield.
A fly out to left field to end the third frame was the first ball she had allowed to be hit out of the infield in four games, since a 4-3 victory over Centre (Ky.) on March 31.
Capital pulled within 4-1 with an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
Northern answered in the bottom of the fourth when Meghan Anten led off with a pinch-hit double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Fought and scored on a throwing error by the CU catcher.
Blewett then doubled home Fought to make it a 6-1 game.
The Polar Bears scored three in the bottom of the fifth to win the game because of the NCAA's 8-run rule.
The rally started when freshman Chrissy Rankin doubled home pinch-runner freshman Michelle Sweet to put ONU up 7-1.
After senior Katie Salay reached on an error, Fought doubled home freshman pinch-runner Abbey Bensing to make it 8-1 and Jackie Mangola hit a sacrifice fly to score Salay with the final run.
Mangola was 2 for 3 with 5 RBI in Game 2.
Sophomore Lauren Hurd (2-0) earned the win by working a perfect two innings, striking out three in relief.
The Polar Bears return to action Wednesday with a non-conference double header against Defiance at the ONU Softball Field.
