Freshman Ashley Sujkowski singled and later scored on a fielding error and senior All-American Tina Mangola drew a bases loaded walk to plate the fourth run of the frame.
Freshman Abbey Bensing notched her first collegiate victory by allowing only two runs in 6.0 innings of relief.
In Game 2, Northern got on the board in the bottom of the first when Fought led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a fly ball by Jackie Mangola and scored on a sac fly by Blewett.
Defiance's Mallory Faling tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when she hit a home run off the top of the fence in left field. The ball hit on top of the fence, went high in the air, and fell over for a home run.
Northern regained its one run lead in the home half of the second when Rankin led off with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt by sophomore Erika Holcomb and scored on a wild pitch.
A 2-run home run by DC's Brittany Gow gave the hosts a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
Northern tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a 2-out double by sophomore Katie Cretin.
DC regained the lead with an unearned run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-3.

ONU got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Sujkowski to go up 6-4.
DC picked up a run in the top of the seventh inning on a wild pitch to make it 6-5, then loaded the bases with two outs and appeared ready to regain the lead.
But sophomore Lauren Hurd got Faling to line out to Rankin at third base to end the game and pick up her third save of the season.
Sophomore Maggie Molnar (7-0) picked up the win.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday with an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marietta.
