Men's Outdoor Track opens 2011 season at Cincinnati Early Bird Invitational
CINCINNATI — Senior Tim Polack won the javelin to lead the Ohio Northern men's track and field team at the season-opening Cincinnati Early Bird Invitational Saturday at Gettler Stadium.
The Polar Bears (6-0 overall) finished second of 12 teams overall and were first of seven NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools with 86 points.
Cincinnati won the overall team title with 160 points, Cedarville was third with 66 and Morehead State was fourth with 61.
Among small schools, Cedarville was second with 66 points, Capital was third with 55 points and Mount Saint Joseph was fourth with 37 points.
Polack won the javelin with a toss of 48.72 meters and finished second in the high jump by clearing 1.83 meters to lead the Polar Bears.
Freshmen Francis Pierre-Jerome and Thomas Steinberger also posted a pair of top-10 finishes for ONU.
Pierre-Jerome was third in the 100 dash in 11.10 seconds and was fourth in the 200 dash in 22.72 seconds, while Steinberger was second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.25 meters and was ninth in the long jump with a distance on 5.99 meters.
Senior Ryan Fleming and sophomore Ben Ankrom also posted second place finishes, as Fleming was second in the 100 in 11.01 seconds and Ankrom was second in the 1500 in 3:54.25.
Senior Evan Heyman was third in the 200 dash in 22.53 seconds.
Senior Shane Huntley was third in the 400 dash in 51.13 seconds.
Junior Cory Bailey was third in the 800 run in 1:54.12 and joined freshman Evan McKee, senior Travis Isenberg and senior Dam Smith to finish fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:31.68.
Senior Garrett Brown was third in the 400 hurdles in :56.58 and freshman Tyler Borton was third in the pole vault by clearing 4.25 meters.
Freshman Kyle Weslosky was seventh in the javelin with a toss of 38.77 meters and Jason Aukerman was eighth with a heave of 38.24 meters.
Ohio Northern will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Washington & Lee (Va.) Carnival.
