Nine Men’s Tennis student-athletes named Scholar Athletes by ITA

ADA — Nine members of the Ohio Northern men's tennis team were named Scholar Athletes for 2022 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Senior management and marketing major Zach Beaschler (Ada), senior electrical engineering major Andrew Cochran (Wooster), junior finance major Matt Garcia (Downers Grove, Ill./South), sophomore general studies major Kavya Desai (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), sophomore electrical engineering major Isaac Spar (Ada), freshman business major Tristan Munteanu (Draper, Utah/Corner Canyon), freshman civil engineering major Peyton Specht (Munster, Ind.), freshman computer engineering major Sam Sran (PB, India/St. Stephens and Gian Jyoti Global) and freshman biology major Drew Swisher (Findlay) all received the honor.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year.
Ohio Northern also earned the ITA Scholar All-America Team award, which is given to teams with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year.
The Polar Bears finished the 2021-22 season at 23-5 overall, setting a new program record for victories in a season. They were a perfect 6-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and won the OAC regular-season and tournament championships.
The team went on to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament and defeated Grove City (Pa.) in the opening round before falling to eventual national runner-up Case Western Reserve.
Sixth-year head coach Mike Bonnell was named the 2021-22 OAC Coach of the Year.
