Men’s Tennis garners eight All-OAC selections, Mike Bonnell named Coach of the Year

ADA — Eight members of the Ohio Northern men's tennis team were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference for 2022 in voting conducted by the league's head coaches.
Fifth-year senior Vinh Thai (Galloway/St. Charles) and senior Andrew Cochran (Wooster) were named First Team All-Conference. Senior Zach Beaschler (Ada) and freshmen Sam Sran (PB, India/St. Stephens and Gian Jyoti Global), Peyton Specht (Munster, Ind.) and Tristan Munteanu (Draper, Utah/Corner Canyon) were All-Conference Second Team selections, and junior Matt Garcia (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and freshman Drew Swisher (Findlay) earned Honorable Mention accolades.
The conference also named sixth-year head coach Mike Bonnell as the league's Coach of the Year.
Thai, the 2018-19 OAC Player of the Year, is now a four-time All-OAC First Team selection after posting a 31-18 overall record and earning three OAC Player of the Week accolades this season.
He was 16-6 in singles and 15-12 in doubles and joined ONU's 100-Win Club.
In five seasons as a Polar Bear, Thai is 108-69 overall, including 54-30 in singles and 54-39 in doubles. He ranks 18th all-time at ONU in overall career victories.
Cochran was 12-12 in singles and 19-8 in doubles this season for an overall mark of 31-20 en route to earning All-OAC First Team honors for the second straight year.
In four years at ONU, Cochran is 86-50 overall, including 42-26 in singles and 44-24 in doubles.
Beaschler led the Polar Bears in overall wins this season, ranked second in doubles victories and third in singles wins. He was 17-2 in singles, 21-4 in doubles and 38-6 overall and earned All-OAC Second Team honors for the second straight season.
An All-OAC Honorable Mention selection as a freshman, Beaschler has a career record of 91-37, including 41-19 in singles and 50-18 in doubles.
Sran led ONU in singles victories this season. He was 22-7 in singles and 3-3 in doubles for a 25-10 overall mark.
Specht earned a pair of OAC Player of the Week accolades this season and finished second on the team in singles wins and overall victories. He closed the year with a 35-13 overall record, including 20-4 in singles and 15-9 in doubles.
Munteanu is the third Polar Bear freshman to earn All-OAC Second Team honors this season. He was 10-6 in singles, 1-4 in doubles and 11-10 overall.
Garcia is an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection this season after earning Second Team honors as a sophomore. He was 4-1 in singles, 14-12 in doubles and 18-13 overall in 2021-22.
Swisher earned Honorable Mention honors after leading ONU in doubles wins and ranking third in overall victories. He was 33-9 overall, including 11-4 in singles and 22-5 in doubles.
Bonnell guided the Polar Bears to a 23-5 record in 2021-22, setting a single-season program record for victories. The Polar Bears went a perfect 6-0 in conference play to win their 10th OAC Regular Season championship in program history and went on to win their 11th OAC Tournament championship, marking the first time since 2013 that Northern had won either title. ONU closed the year with an NCAA Tournament victory over Grove City (Pa.) before falling to No. 2 Case Western Reserve in the Second Round.
In six seasons at ONU, Bonnell boasts a 72-41 record, a winning percentage of .637.
