Mount Union leads after Day 1 of 2012 OAC Championships
The Ohio Northern women’s swimming and diving team won its fourth consecutive team title behind sophomore Lindsey Rayhill’s winning effort in the 200 fly on the final day of the 2012 Women’s Ohio Athletic Conference Championships Saturday night at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.
The Polar Bears won the title with 859 points, Mount Union was second with 776, John Carroll was third with 646, Baldwin-Wallace was fourth with 380, Wilmington was fifth with 277 and first-year participant Defiance was sixth with 197 points.
John Carroll junior Julia Adams was named the OAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive year after winning the 100 back in 2:08.83 on Saturday, giving her a sweep of the backstroke events in the championships. She also set an OAC record in the 200 I.M. on Thursday.
Baldwin-Wallace junior Julie Pinter was named the OAC Diver of the Year for the third consecutive time after sweeping the diving events on the weekend. On Saturday, Pinter won the 1-meter diving with a score of 476.60.
In the first event of the evening, Mount Union senior Alyson Kolesar completed her sweep of the distance events, rallying past senior three-time defending champion Michelle Eggers of Ohio Northern over the final 400 yards.
Kolesar’s winning 18:11.04 was 1:01.09 ahead of Eggers’ time of 18:11.13 and gave Kolesar the 200, 500 and 1650 free titles at the 2012 championships.
The Purple Raiders placed four swimmers in the top five in the event.
Mount Union sophomore Courtney Gabel won the 100 free in an OAC record :52.87, giving her the 50-100 freestyle sweep on the weekend.
Baldwin-Wallace sophomore Angela Musille won the 200 breast in an OAC record and NCAA “B” Cut time of 2:24.08 to give her a sweep of the breaststroke events.
ONU sophomore Lindsey Rayhill won her second consecutive OAC title in the 200 fly, breaking her own OAC record with a time of 2:08.72.
Mount Union wrapped up the meet with a record-setting performance in the 400 free relay, as Gabel, junior Sarah Noble, senior Taylor Harrison and Kolesar set an OAC record with a finish of 3:35.58.
Ohio Northern sophomore Amanda Everlove set a new American Paralympic (S8 Classification) record in the 200 fly, finishing her prelim exhibition swim in 2:31.67.
