ADA — Ohio Northern sophomore Holden Cubberley (Celina) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Diver of the Month for January.
This marks the second such honor of the 2022-23 season for Cubberley and third of his career.
The latest recognition comes after he posted an impressive month on the diving board highlighted by setting a new school record in 1-meter diving. He did so against Grove City (Pa.) on Jan. 28, scoring 328.65 points over six dives to lead the Polar Bears to a 151-133 victory. The previous record was 304.20 points, which was set by George Chesney in 2009.
Cubberley also won the 3-meter diving event unopposed against Grove City, scoring a career-best 295.30 points for six dives.
Cubberley also fared well at the Polar Bears' other January meets.
He opened the month by finishing first of two in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events in a tri-meet at Oberlin with No. 2 Kenyon on Jan. 13. He also won both events in a tri-meet at Ohio Wesleyan with Bluffton on Jan. 20.
In dual meets at Mount Union on Jan. 14 and against Baldwin Wallace on Jan. 21, he won the 1-meter diving and was second in 3-meter diving.
Cubberley's performances helped Northern post a 6-1 record in January.
The reigning OAC Diver of the Year, Cubberley qualified for the NCAA Championships in both 1- and 3-meter diving as a freshman last season. He holds the school record in the 3-meter diving competition with 500.50 points for 11 dives.
The Polar Bears finished the regular season with a 7-2 overall record and return to action on Feb. 15-18 for the OAC Championships at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.
