Cope, Cubberley win events to lead Men's Swimming and Diving into second place after day one of Calvin (Mich.) Quad Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Senior Calob Cope (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and sophomore Holden Cubberley (Celina) each won events to lead the Ohio Northern men's swimming and diving team on the first day of the Calvin (Mich.) Quad Meet on Friday night at the Venema Aquatic Center.
The Polar Bears are second of four teams with have 228 points after six of 20 events. Calvin is first with 591, Carthage (Wis.) is third with 216 and Albion (Mich.) is fourth with 177.
Cope touched first of 30 swimmers in the 500-yard free in 4:53.27 and Cubberley defeated nine other divers to win the 1-meter diving with 480.55 points. Cubberley's score was just 16 points off the school record 496.30 mark by Rick Jobe in 1985.
Freshman Tyler Edmonds (Youngsville, La./Southside)led three top-10 finished in the 200 I.M. by touching fourth in 2:01.62. Freshman Long Huynh () was ninth in 2:03.61 and freshman Nathan Clark (Cleves/Elder) was tenth in 2:03.85.
In the 50 free, freshmen Selby Wilt (Findlay) was sixth in :21.25 and sophomore Brady Horgan (New Richmond/McNicholas) was eighth in :21.67.
Northern opened the night with a third place finish in the 200 free relay with Clark, Wilt, freshman Aiden Magoolaghan (Hinckley/Highland) and Horgan finishing in 1:26.42.
Junior Charlie Spyker (Harrod/Shawnee), Clark, senior Jackson Stanley (Beavercreek) and Will ended the evening with a fourth place finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:37.90.
Day two of the meet will begin with the second session on Saturday at 10 am and conclude with the third session on Saturday at 4 pm.
