INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Ohio Northern sophomore Jordan Breitigam finished tied for sixth in his heat in the 100 fly on Day 2 of the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday morning at the IUPUI Natatorium.
Senior All-American Michael Schultz finished eighth in his heat and was 33rd out of 43 swimmers in the 200 free, finishing in 1:42.29.
Breitigam's time of :50.58 was good for a tie for 31st place out of 44 swimmers in the event.
Breitigam entered the meet ranked 31st with a qualifying time of :50.15.
"Jordan's time was a solid time for him, considering he is under the weather," ONU head coach Peggy Ewald said. "We felt if he could get under 51 seconds that would be good and he did that. Mike got a slow start in a slow heat, and when that happens to distance swimmers it is tough to overcome it. Hopefully we can finish strong in the next two days as those are the best events for both guys."
The top 16 in each event qualify for the finals each night, with the top eight finishers earning All-America honors and finishers 9-16 earning Honorable Mention All-America honors.
Schultz is a four-time NCAA qualifier in the 200, 500 and 1650 free and will compete in all three events this year.
He qualified for the meet with a school-record 1:40.30 at the OAC Championships.
Breitigam will conclude his Championships on Friday in the 200 fly, where he is seeded seventh nationally with a qualifying time of 1:50.43.
Schultz will wrap up his NCAA Championships Saturday morning in the 1650 free, where he is seeded 17th with a qualifying time of 15:56.94.
On Thursday, Schultz finished 24th in the 500 free in 4:35.58 and Breitigam finished 46th in the 200 I.M. in 2:00.47.
