Sommerfeld, Shaffer lead Men's Soccer to 6-0 win over Muskingum on Senior Day

ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team clinched a spot in the six-team Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 6-0 victory over Muskingum in Saturday afternoon's Senior Day game.

- The Polar Bears scored three first-half goals beginning with one from junior Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman), assisted by junior Tanner Locke (Canton, Mich./Salem) and senior Will Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales), just 11:01 into the game.
- Freshman Colin Gottron made it a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 29th minute.
- Junior Kellan Minch (Beavercreek) found the back in the net in the 41st minute on an assist from sophomore Alex Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales).
- Leading 3-0 entering the second half, the Polar Bears added to it with a goal from Sommerfeld in the 48th minute.

- Junior Nate Gottron (Centerville) capped the scoring in the 72nd minute with a goal assisted by freshman Aidan McMahon (Naperville, Ill./North) and junior Ryan Parker (Lexington).
- Junior Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Tex./Oak Ridge) played all 90 minutes in goal for ONU and recorded three saves.
- The Polar Bears out-shot the Muskies 30-5 in the game and finished with an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

- Ohio Northern has clinched a spot in the 2023 OAC Tournament, which begins with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31, on campus sites.
- Following Saturday's game, the team held a Senior Day ceremony recognizing Will Shaffer, Zach Culp (Avon), Jacob Grant (Westerville/North), Ben Sundermann (Miamisburg), Cade Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn./Alcoa) and student manager Tanner Masters.
- Sommerfeld's two goals increased his season total to eight. He has 34 career points on 13 goals and eight assists.
- Will Shaffer also scored his eighth goal of the season. He has 30 career points on 11 goals and eight assists.
- Sommerfeld and Will Shaffer are tied for the team lead in goals and points (19) this season.
- Colin Gottron's goal was his third of the season.
