ADA — Sophomore Ryan Parker (Lexington) scored the game's lone goal Friday night as the Ohio Northern men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 win over Kalamazoo (Mich.) at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-2-0 overall while dropping the Hornets to 1-3-0.
Northern out-shot Kalamazoo 8-2 in the first half, but the teams entered halftime knotted in a scoreless draw.
The scoring drought continued well into the second half before Parker found the back of the net in the 65th minute for his first career goal, which was assisted by sophomores Nate Gottron (Centerville) and Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman).
Sommerfeld now has a team-best seven points through four games.
The Polar Bears continued to hold the Hornets off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as senior goalkeeper Josh Ellis (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) earned his first shutout of the season and third of his career. Ellis finished the game with two saves.
Kalamazoo goalkeeper Gavin Houtkooper recorded six saves.
Northern out-shot Kalamazoo 20-4 overall and held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday when they host No. 21 Ohio Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
