ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team got a 3-1 win over Oberlin in its 2022 home opener on Saturday afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-1-0 overall while dropping the Yeomen to 0-2-0.
Fifth-year senior Bryan Kern (Rocky River) and sophomores Gavin Marshall (Troy) and Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman) each scored goals for ONU.
Sommerfeld also tallied an assist along with senior Daunte George (Bellefontaine) and sophomore William Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales).
The Polar Bears led 2-0 at halftime courtesy of goals from Kern and Marshall.
Kern's goal came in the 19th minute on an assist from Sommerfeld, and Marshall found the back of the net in the 44th minute on an assist from George.
Northern continued to add to its lead in the second half, as Sommerfeld scored in the 58th minute on an assist from Shaffer.
Sommerfeld now has six points through two games this season with two goals and two assists.
The Yeomen got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute courtesy of junior Nasim Amer on an assist from freshman Carlos Febles-Flores.
Senior Josh Ellis (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) got the start in goal for ONU and improved to 1-1-0 on the season while recording two saves.
Sophomore Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Texas/Oak Ridge) played the last nine-plus minutes in goal for the Polar Bears and made one save.
Northern finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears have a quick turnaround, as they host No. 7 North Park (Ill.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
