ADA — Senior Joe Bement (Olmstead Township/Olmstead Falls) netted his first career goal Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as the Ohio Northern men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Wilmington at Kerscher Stadium.
The loss drops the Polar Bears to 7-5-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while keeping the Quakers unbeaten at 10-0-2, 3-0-1.
Wilmington's three goals came courtesy of juniors Jeffry Vasquez and Abdul Yusef Muqtadir and senior Elorm Dogbey.
The Quakers got off to a quick start, as Vasquez scored an unassisted goal, his sixth of the season, just 2:42 into the game.
Wilmington took that 1-0 lead into halftime, and Muqtadir added to it in netting his team-leading eighth goal of the year just 5:05 into the second half on assists from Dogbey and Vasquez to give the visitors a 2-0 edge.
The Polar Bears kept within striking distance, however, as Bement headed in a shot past Wilmington senior goalkeeper Felix Maurer via an assist from senior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) 4:29 later.
The Quakers had an answer, though, regaining their two-goal advantage on Dogbey's seventh goal of the season less than five minutes later to close out the scoring.
Maurer finished with five saves for the Quakers while ONU senior goalkeeper John Lombardo (Solon) tallied two saves in 75:27 of action before being replaced by junior Josh Ellis (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne).
Ohio Northern out-shot Wilmington 14-12 in the game and finished with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Bryan Kern (Ricky River) attempted a team-high four shots for the Polar Bears.
ONU will retake the field on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game at John Carroll.
