POWELL — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team scored in the second minute and tacked on two more late goals to defeat No. 19 Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at Olentangy Liberty High School.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-2-1, while the Battling Bishops are 3-1-0.
Senior Joseph Schulte (Copley) got the Ohio Northern on the board quickly when he scored off a long ball from junior Michael Bringard (Hendersonville, Tenn./Pope John Paul II) just 1:30 into the match.
Junior Luke Fickenworth (Cincinnati/Anderson) scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Anthony DeNoi (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) in the 59th minute to ake it 2-0.
Sophomore Balal Hasan (Westerville/Thomas) scorred with 1:02 left in the match when he tapped in a rebound off a blast from Fickenworth to make it a 3-0 game.
"We played like we expect to play today," ONU head coach Brent Ridenour said. "We got knocked our heels a little bit on Saturday (a 9-2 loss to #5 Calvin). I'm very proud of our defense. They played very well. We just beat a very good, undefeated and nationally-ranked team. If we collectively play our style of soccer consistently I think we can play like each night."
OWU outshot ONU 22-14.
The match was moved from OWU's home field earlier in the week due to poor playing conditions.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday night when they host Oberlin at 7:30 pm at Kerscher Stadium.
