LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team battled their way to a 1-1 double overtime draw against Transylvania (Ky.) to begin the 2018 campaign.
Both teams move to 0-0-1 on the year.
Transylvania struck first in the 13th minute to open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead.
Northern responded just a 1:35 later with a goal of its own in the 14th minute.
Junior defender Michael Bringard (Hendersonville, Tenn./Pope John Paul II) played a long ball from just outside ONU's 18-yard box deep into the Transylvania end.
Senior Anthony DeNoi (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) one-touched the ball from 15 yards out and beat the TU keeper to score the equalizer.
The Polar Bear defense held their own after playing with 10 men for the last 30 minutes of regulation and all 20 minutes of overtime.
The contest featured 14 shots by ONU and 16 shots by TU, but neither team could find the back of the net after the early scoring, resulting in a 1-1 double overtime draw.
In his first career start, senior goalie William Velotta (Gates Mills/Gilmour Academy) made five saves.
Ohio Northern recorded 13 corners to seven for Transylvania.
The Polar Bears return to action with their home opener on Sunday at noon against Cincinnati State at Kerscher Stadium.
