ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated John Carroll 2-1 Saturday evening in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears move to 9-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the OAC, while John Carroll moves to 5-3-1, 0-1-0.
Junior Matt Kinkopf led the ONU attack, recording five shots and scoring his OAC-leading 10th goal for the Polar Bears.
After a scoreless first half, Kinkopf broke the tie in the 48th minute when he capitalized on a JCU miscue and scored on an empty net.
Minutes later, junior Austin Horton would rebound a saved ball and score from six yards out to give Northern a quick 2-0 lead.
The Blue Streaks would get one back in the 65th minute to pull within 2-1.
The ONU defense held strong as they were able to hold John Carroll to just six second half shots and hold on for the victory.
The Polar Bears out shot the Blue Streaks by a 14-13 margin.
Northern returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Wilmington to take on the Quakers at 7 pm.
