ADA — The No. 23-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team opened its 2014 season in dominating fashion with a 9-0 victory over Muskegon (Mich.) Community College Friday night at Kerscher Stadium on first day of the ONU Invitational.
The Polar Bears improve their record to 1-0-0 on the season. The Jayhawks fall to 0-1-0.
Senior Keegan Ross and sophomore Matt Kinkopf each scored two goals on the night to lead Ohio Northern.
Kinkopf also added two assist on the night to go with his two goals.
Leading 2-0 at intermission, the Polar Bears put the match away by scoring six goals in a 17:57 span to extend their lead to 8-0.
Ross got ONU on the board in the first half by beating the goalie near the post in the 28th minute.
Kinkopf and sophomore Austin Horton earned the assists on the play.
Sophomore David Janusz found the back of the net off of a free kick from sophomore Dustin Lorenzo at the 35:57 mark to make the score 2-0.
Ohio Northern outshot Muskegon 30-10 on the night while putting 13 of its shots on goal.
Freshman Dean McNeil earned the win for ONU with two saves in goal and improved his record to 1-0-0 on the year.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday night when they take on DePauw (Ind.) at 7:30 pm for the ONU Invitational crown.
