ADA – Junior Jeremy Barnes scored twice, but the No. 4-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as No. 13 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) posted a 3-2 victory over the Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears fall to 4-1-0 on the season, while the Tartans improve their record to 3-1-0.
The game took place at the ONU practice field due to unplayble field conditions on the regular playing field due to heavy rains overnight.
Three of the game's five goals were scored in the first 14 minutes of the match, with the first coming off a loose ball in the box on a free kick by Alex Abedian of the Tartans in the fifth minute. Ben Bryant of the Tartans had the assist.
The Polar Bears quickly responded with an unassisted goal by Barnes in the sixth minute on another loose ball in the box.
Bryant was part of the action again in the 14th minute when he scored Carnegie Mellon's second goal on a penalty kick.
Ohio Northern tied up the game 2-2 in the 43rd minute, as Barnes took a pass from freshman Keegan Ross and put it passed the goalie. This was Barnes' second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
The game-deciding goal came shortly after the second half started when Tartan Mike Ferraco passed the ball to fellow teammate Max Tassano who put Carnegie Mellon in the lead in the 52nd minute of the game.
Senior goal keeper Mac Church suffered his first loss and falls to 4-1-0 on the season. He made two saves in the effort.
Tartan goalie Christopher Madden improved to 3-1-0 and made six saves.
The Polar Bears out-shot the Tartans 11 to 10 and had more shots on goal (8 to 5), but Carnegie Mellon put more shots in the net, resulting in a Polar Bear loss.
Ohio Northern hopes to get back on the winning track on Tuesday as they travel to Springfield to take on the Wittenberg at 7 pm.
