ADA — The No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 conference win over Heidelberg at the ONU Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.
With the win, Northern improves to 15-2-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 3-10-4 and 1-6-1 in the OAC.
The 2011-12 senior class also becomes the winningest in program history, earning its 67th win in four years, one better than last year's graduating class.
A pair of seniors also earned assists in the win. A free kick by senior Cory Dobkins appeared to be on target, but a misdirection by junior Nate Bascom caught the defense and goalie off guard, as he snuck it into the net.
The goal, scored in the 52nd minute, was Bascom's 12th of the year and Dobkins' fourth assist.
In the 69th minute, a pair of nice passes through the box from senior Robert Sellers and sophomore Jeremy Barnes found Bascom once again, as he had an open shot into the corner of the goal.
The assists were the fourth of the year for Sellers and second for Barnes.
ONU earned its third-straight shutout and extended its unbeaten streak to ten games, winning each of the last seven.
Junior Mac Church and senior Mike Girardot combined for four saves and a team shutout, helped by outstanding defensive play once again.
"This was a big win for our seniors, and our defense was amazing again today," head coach Brent Ridenour said. "Heidelberg is a tough team and played very well today, so we're happy to come out on top."
With the win, the Polar Bears clinched a top-two seed in next week's OAC Tournament, meaning they will host at least one game.
The Polar Bears will travel to Marietta for the regular season finale on Friday at 4 p.m. An ONU win would clinch regular season title and the top seed in the OAC Tournament, giving ONU home-field advantage throughout.
