BEREA — Junior Cameron Marous (Brecksville) scored four goals and senior Anthony Pavone (Bainbridge/Kentson) added three goals to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team in a tight 16-14 loss at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday evening at Finnie Stadium.
The Polar Bears saw two school record winning streaks come to an end and fall to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference.
Northern entered the game riding a 10-game overall win streak and had won 13 consecutive road games, dating to early 2018.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 10-2, 4-1 as well.
ONU scored three goals in a 1:14 span to tie the game at 4-4 late in the first period when BW answered with a 6-1 run to go up 10-5 midway through the second quarter.
Northern again had a 3-goal flurry, this time in 2:38, to pull within 10-8 with 4:42 to go in the half.
Trailing 12-8 at intermission, ONU would score four of the next five goals, capped by a man-up goal by Pavone, to get within 13-12 with 14:07 left in the game.
BW answered with three straight goals to increase its lead to 16-12 with 2:30 left.
Pavone and senior Max Weese (Hilliard/Darby) scored 1:06 apart to make it 16-14 with 1:05 left.
Northern won the ensuing faceoff and got off three shots on goal in the final minute, but two were wide and the third was blocked and BW held on for the win.
Ohio Northern outshot Baldwin Wallace 42-36 and won 18 of the 32 faceoffs.
Junior Javon Smith (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) had four ground balls to lead the ONU defense.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with a 1 pm match at Marietta.
