ADA — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team turned in an impressive defensive performance and a well-balanced offensive effort in a 10-2 victory over Mount Union on Friday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 8-1 overall and are 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders fall to 4-5, 1-1.
In all, nine different Ohio Northern players scored in the contest, led by sophomore John Mullin (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) with two goals and sophomore Cameron Marous (Brecksville) with one goal and five assists.
Junior Andrew Markell (Missouri City, Tex./Ridge Point) was outstanding in his first career start in goal, finishing with eight saves and an .800 save percentage.
The ONU defense was outstanding in front of Markell, forcing MtU into 22 turnovers.
It was all offense early on, as Northern raced to a 3-1 lead just 3:42 into the contest.
Mullin scored his first goal just 53 seconds into the game and sophomore Samuel Neff (Fairfax Station, Va./Trinity Christian) followed with a goal 55 seconds later to quickly make it 2-0.
MtU scored just 13 seconds later to make it 2-1, but Marous answered at the 11:18 mark of the opening period to start a streak of eight consecutive ONU goals.
Junior Peter Hardt (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and junior Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) scored to put Ohio Northern up 5-1 after the first quarter.
Junior Mitch Groves (Fishers, Ind./Chatard) made it 6-1 at halftime and junior Nicholas Groves (Fishers, Ind./Chatard) scored 3:33 into the second half to put ONU up 7-1.
Sophomore Shane Olsen (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Mullin and freshman Mason Schmeling (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) all scored to put Ohio Northern up 10-1 with 13:44 left in the game.
The Polar Bears out-shot the Purple Raiders 49-19.
Ohio Northern will return to action on Wednesday with a road game at Wilmington.
