ALFRED, N.Y. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit and rallied to defeat Alfred (N.Y.) 9-6 on Saturday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium.
The Polar Bears move to 6-1 on the season, while the Saxons fall to 4-2.
Seven Polar Bears scored for ONU, led by 2-goal efforts from junior Noah St. Croix (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) and sophomore Patrick Moran (Austin, Tex./Bowie).
Sophomore Logan Krogman (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) picked up a game-high seven ground balls in the victory.
Alfred struck first at the 12:49 mark of the first quarter, before a goal from sophomore Shane Olsen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) knotted the game at 1-1.
After junior Anthony Pavone (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) answered a Saxon goal in the second quarter, Alfred scored two unanswered to end the half and take a 4-2 lead into the break.
The third quarter proved to be the difference for Northern, as they outscored Alfred 5-1 to gain momentum and take a 7-5 lead into the fourth period.
In the third quarter, back-to-back goals from sophomore Cameron Marous (Brecksville) and Moran evened the contest at 4-4 before Alfred answered with a goal at the 11:15 mark.
From there, goals from St. Croix, junior Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and sophomore Samuel Neff (Fairfax Station, Va./Trinity Christian) pushed the Polar Bear lead to 7-5.
St. Croix and Moran scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter and extend the lead to 9-5.
Alfred tacked on one more goal with less than a minute to go, but the Polar Bear defense held strong and sealed the 9-6 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Pizarro (Boonsboro, Md.) posted the victory in the goal, recording eight saves and moving his record to 6-1 on the season.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 1 p.m. as they return home and welcome Beloit (Wis.) to Dial-Roberson Stadium.
