Men's Lacrosse drops 11-8 decision to McDaniel (Md.) to begin 4-game road trip

WESTMINSTER, Md. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team dropped its first contest of the season at McDaniel (Md.) as it fell to the Green Terror 11-8 on Saturday afternoon to begin its 4-game road trip.
The Polar Bears fall to 3-1 on the season, while McDaniel moves to 2-2 overall.
Sophomores Cameron Marous (Brecksville) and Shane Olsen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) led the way for the Polar Bears with two goals each, while junior Anthony Pavone (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) added a game-best two assists.
Marous struck first for the Polar Bears at the 8:46 mark of the first period after Pavone found him to push the lead to 1-0.
Olsen found the back of the net with three minutes left in the first quarter on a quick shot from 15 yards out to push the lead to 2-0 after one quarter.
Pavone would tally his first goal of the afternoon at the 11:56 mark of the second quarter after taking a pass from junior Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) to extend the lead Polar Bear lead to 3-0.
McDaniel would cut the gap to 3-2 heading into the intermission after scoring two unanswered to end the first half.
The Green Terror would add two more goals to open to open the half and take a 4-3 lead, before Marous found junior Nicholas Groves (Fishers, Ind./Chatard) to knot the game at 4-4 with 10:27 left in the third quarter.
Seconds later, sophomore Samuel Neff (Fairfax Station, Va./Trinity Christian) scored an unassisted goal to help ONU regain the lead at 5-4 with 9:46 remaining in the third period.
Olsen found the back of the net for his second unassisted goal of the afternoon as he netted a goal with 6:16 left in the third quarter to push the lead to 6-4. McDaniel would answer shortly after with a goal to cut the lead to 6-5.
Just over 20 seconds later, the Green Terror added another goal to knot the game at 6-6 with 5:07 left in the third quarter.
Pavone would find Weese for a wide open goal from just inside 15 yards out less than a minute later to help ONU regain the 1-goal lead at 7-6.
McDaniel would add a man-up goal late in the third quarter to even the score at 7-all, before a goal from Marous with six seconds left in the third period gave ONU an 8-7 lead heading into the final period of play.
MC would waste no time tying the game up after scoring on a strike just under a minute and a half into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8.
Northern would surrender back-to-back goals late in the fourth quarter as McDaniel took a 10-8 lead with 4:25 left in the contest.
The Polar Bears could not get any closer as McDaniel went on to win, 11-8.
ONU forced 10 turnovers in the contest and picked up 19 ground balls as a team.
The Polar Bears return to action on Tuesday evening as they play the second of their 4-game road trip and take on Immaculata (Pa.) at 5 pm.
