UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team battled league-leading John Carroll tough for the full 60 minutes before falling in a tight 11-8 decision on Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 9-5 overall and are 4-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Blue Streaks improve to 8-4, 6-0.
Sophomore Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and freshman Cameron Marous (Brecksville) each tallied two goals to lead the ONU offense.
Marous also added an assist for a team-best three points on the day.
JCU scored the first three goals of the game, but Ohio Northern rallied for four straight to take a 4-3 lead with 8:30 left in the half.
Again JCU scored three straight goals to go up 6-4, but Northern closed the half on two goals by Marous just eight seconds apart, at the 1:11 and 1:03 marks of the second quarter, to tie the game at 6-all at intermission.
The Blue Streaks notched the only goal of the third quarter to lead 7-6 after 45 minutes of play.
JCU would add on the next four goals to take an 11-6 lead with 5:13 to play.
But ONU would again rally, getting goals from sophomore Drew Eramo (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) and freshman Logan Krogman (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) just 11 seconds apart to pull within 11-8 with 57 seconds to play.
But the hosts would manage to run out the final seconds and hang on for the win.
John Carroll out-shot Ohio Northern 27-24 and edged ONU in ground balls 34-29.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday with a 7 pm contest at Otterbein.
