ADA -- Sophomore Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) picked up his sixth career hat trick with four goals to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to a 12-4 victory over Calvin (Mich.) on a cold and windy afternoon in its 2017 home opener at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-1.
Weese scored his first three goals in a span of 4:02 to give the hosts a 6-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first half.
Weese also had an assist for five points on the day.
Freshman Cameron Marous (Brecksville) also had five points for the Polar Bears, with two goals and three assists.
Sophomore Peter Hardt (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and freshmen Samuel Neff (Fairfax Station, Va./Trinity Christian) and Kevin Giles (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) all scored early on as ONU led 3-0 with 2:21 left in the first period.
Weese made it 4-0 with 1:07 left in the first, then scored 1:58 and 3:05 into the second quarter to put the Polar Bears in control.
Sophomore Anthony Pavone (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had three points with two goals and an assist for ONU.
Ohio Northern led 6-1 at the half and 9-2 after three quarters.
Northern emptied its bench in the second half as 37 players saw action in the game.
The Polar Bears outshot the Knights 42-20, enjoyed a 43-31 advantage in ground balls and won 15 of the 20 face-offs.
Ohio Northern will return to action March 5 with a 1 pm contest at Hampden-Sydney (Va.)
