ALLIANCE — Ohio Northern battled for a full 60 minutes, but fell 13-8 in its inaugural Ohio Athletic Conference game at Mount Union on a snowy afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 7-2 overall and are 0-1 in OAC play, while the Purple Raiders improve to 7-2, 2-0.
Freshman Steven Slagle had a goal and six assists to lead Ohio Northern.
Freshmen Max Weese, Anthony Pavone and Noah St. Croix each added a pair of goals for ONU.
Mount Union out-scored ONU 8-2 in the key second second quarter to turn a 1-1 tie into a 9-3 lead at intermission.
The Purple Raider scored five consecutive goals in a 7:50 span in the second quarter to turn a 3-2 game into an 8-2 lead.
UMU extended its lead to 13-5 in the third quarter before ONU Northern rallied with goals by St. Croix and freshman Drew Eramo to make it 13-7 by the end of the period.
The defense took control in a scoreless fourth quarter until Pavone scored with six seconds left in the game.
"I'm proud of the way our guys battled," ONU head coach Nat St. Laurent said. "We struggled in the second quarter and the game got away from us a bit. But we kept playing hard and I like the way we responded."
Mount Union out-shot Ohio Northern 40-33 in the game.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday night at Capital.
