ADA - Seniors Jackie Mangola and Scott Schnelle were chosen as the 2011-12 Clyde A. Lamb award winners, an honor given to the top female and male student-athletes at each of the Ohio Athletic Conference's 10 institutions.
The award's namesake honors the man who organized the Department of Health and Physical Education at ONU in 1929. Lamb served as coach, department chairman and athletics director for 35 years.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a senior with at least two years of participation in his or her sport and have a minimum GPA of 3.00. The student-athlete must also display a sportsmanlike conduct throughout the season and career that has brought credit to the athlete and the insitution.
Mangola has had a storied collegiate career as a softball standout. In her career, she has been named First Team All-America, All-Region and All-OAC multiple times, in addition to being earning the OAC Player of the Year nod twice.
This season, she has recorded a .307 batting average with seven doubles, a triple and four homers. She and the Polar Bears won the Alma (Mich.) Regional Tournament of the NCAA Championship and will make an appearance in the Division III College World Series this weekend.
Mangola is a physical education major from Cranberry Township, Pa.
As a senior on the men's basketball team, Schnelle started in all 28 games, leading the team in blocked shots (44) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) and second in scoring at 12.6 ppg. His efforts throughout the 2011-12 season earned him a spot as Second Team All-OAC and Academic All-OAC.
