Schnelle's 22 points leads Men's Basketball in 75-74 setback at Heidelberg
TIFFIN — Ohio Northern senior Scott Schnelle had game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the ONU men's basketball team in a tight 75-74 setback at Heidelberg Wednesday night at Sieberling Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears fall to 7-5 overall and are 3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Student Princes improve to 4-8, 2-3.
Sophomore Jared Horstman scored 15 points, sophomore Branden Rushton added 13 points and junior Taylor Kuhlman added 12 points for Ohio Northern.
Nate Davis led HU with 16 points while Darion Capers and Dane Givner added 14 points each.
The Student Princes went on a 7-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 63-53 with 8:14 left in the game.
Northern made a furious rally late, scoring the game's final seven points.
Trailing 75-67, Kuhlman scored with 25 second left and hit another basket with 14 second left to make it a 75-71 game.
Horstman then nailed a 3-pointer with two seconds left, but HU was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.
ONU led 37-36 at halftime after freshman Adam Bair nailed a 3-pointer with 43 seconds to play in the first period.
Four consecutive free throws by Schnelle broke a 23-all tie and gave ONU its biggest lead of the night at 27-23 with 6:10 left before halftime.
Ohio Northern made 25-of-59 field goal attempts for 42.4 percent, while Heidelberg shot 53.8 percent from floor on 28-of-52 shooting.
ONU out-rebounded HU 35-32 on the night.
The Polar Bears will return home on Saturday to face Mount Union at 3 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
