Bio

Sammie Coates is in his first season as an assistant football coach at Ohio Northern. He will coach the receivers.

Coates comes to ONU after three seasons as an assistant coach at Jensen Beach High School in Jupiter, Fla.

He had a standout professional and collegiate career, spending five seasons in the NFL, one season in the XFL and two seasons with a pair of CFL teams from 2015-2023.

Coates was an All-SEC receiver at Auburn, where he caught 82 passes for 1,757 yards and 13 touchdowns in three seasons.

He was drafted in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015 and caught 22 passes for 446 yards and two TDs in two seasons.

The Leroy, Ala., native played the 2017 season with the Cleveland Browns and the 2018 campaign with the Houston Texans.

In 2019, he spent the offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coates then spent the 2020 season with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL.

He signed contracts with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in 2021 and the Edmonton Elks in 2023, but did not see action.

In his five years in the NFL, he caught 29 passes for 528 yards and two scores.

Coates earned his bachelor of arts degree in public administration from Auburn in 2014.
