Saturday's Contest: Saturday is the third home game and the fifth game overall of the 2017 season for Ohio Northern. It is also the fifth night game in Dial-Roberson Stadium history.
ONU Head Coach Dean Paul: Paul is in his 14th season at ONU with a 91-47 record. He is 131-59 in 18 seasons overall and is 10-3 against CU.
CU head coach Chad Rogesheske: Rogosheske is in his 2nd season at CU with a 5-9 record. He is 0-1 against Ohio Northern.
ONU Last Week: Ohio Northern dropped a 43-14 decision at No. 2-ranked Mt Union. Trailing 3-0 late in the first quarter, Northern drove deep into MtU territory. But an 89-yard pick-6 turned the momentum of the game and gave the hosts a 10-0 lead with :49 left in the first period. The Polar Bears got on the board when QB Will Freed hit WR Malachi Nolletti on a 13-yard TD pass with 7:13 left in the third quarter to make it 27-7. Later in the game, Freed hit Nolletti on an 8-yard TD pass with 3:07 left to play to complete the scoring. Defensively, DT Kyle Rowe and S Andrew Valenti had 9 tackles each. MtU out-gained ONU 454-214 in total offense and held the ball for 34:31.
ONU Leaders: The ONU running game is led by All-OAC RB Christiaan Williams (105 att, 466 yards, 2 TDs). All-OAC QB Will Freed is 91-of-139 passing for 1,092 yards and 12 TDs. WR Chad Rex (20 rec, 385 yards, 7 TDs), RB Rodney Holmes (19 rec, 144 yards) and RB Christiaan Williams (19 rec, 128 yards) lead the receiving corps. LB Mark Niles, LB Zach Schmerge and S Greg Dennis lead the defense with 31, 24 and 22 tackles, respectively. DL Justin Croswell leads the team with 3.0 sacks.
CU Last Week: QB Thomas Wibbeler threw for 399 yards and 6 TDs in a 49-42 loss to rival Otterbein at Capital. Wibbeler threw TD passes of 26 and 18 yards to WR David Barnett just 4:21 apart to rally CU to a 42-42 tie in the fourth quarter, only to see OU regain a 49-42 leadwith 7:42 to play. CU drove to the OU 25 on its final possession, but an interception ended the threat and Otterbein ran out the clock. Defensively, LB Kole Carter had 13 tackles, 2 sacks and recovered a fumble to lead the CU defense. OU out-gained Capital 495-476 in total offense.
CU Leaders: The CU running game is led by RB Cory Heeter (41 att, 219 yards, 1 TD) and RB Nateshawn Hargrove (15 att, 103 yards, 2 TDs). QB Thomas Wibbeler is 90-of-149 passing for 1,229 yards and 15 TDs. WR David Barnett (25 rec., 352 yards, 4 TDs) and WR Dar Stanford (22 rec., 396 yards, 6 TDs) lead the CU receivers. LB Kane Murray, S Eric Stroski and LB Derek Eibon lead the defense with 41, 30 and 22 tackles, respectively. LB Kole Carter leads CU with 2.0 sacks.
Last Year's Game: Ohio Northern got four touchdown runs from RB Christiaan Williams and three TD passes from QB Will Freed to post a 58-21 victory at Capital. Williams ran 23 times for 127 yards and four scores and Freed completed 16-of-26 passes for 195 yards and three TDs for ONU. WR Chad Rex finished the day with a career-high 83 yards rushing and caught four passes for 47 yards for 130 all-purpose yards. Ohio Northern out-gained Capital 497-310 in total offense. LB Zach Schmerge had 15 tackles and a half sack and LB Nathan Kaszei had a career-high 10 tackles in his first career start for the Northern defense. The win was the ninth consecutive for ONU in the series and the 58-point effort was the most in a game at Capital since a 70-38 win in 1998.
