TIFFIN — Senior Chayten Overholt (Delphos/Lincolnview) pounded out six base hits and scored three runs to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team to a double header split at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on Saturday at Happy Valley.
The Student Princes (14-22 overall, 5-11 OAC) won the opener 6-3, but the Polar Bears (17-19, 6-10) won the nightcap 4-2.
Overholt was 3-for-4 in each game and scored all three of his runs in the successful game two.
Northern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Nate Webb (Bath, Ind./Union County) tripled home senior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian).
Overholt made it 2-0 in the second inning when he scored on a squeeze bunt by freshman Sam Harrison (Perrysburg/St. Francis de Sales).
In the seventh inning, Overholt ripped a 1-out triple and scored on an infield single by freshman Ethan Spears (Oregon/Clay) with ONU clinging to a 2-1 lead.
After HU got within 3-2, Spears again knocked in Overholt with another insurance run with a single in the ninth to make it 4-2.
Junior Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein/Marion Local) struck out 13 batters in 7.0 strong innings of work to pick up the win, while freshman Kyle Lawrence (Valparaiso, Ind.) picked up his first career save.
In the opener, Heidelberg broke open a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 6-2 lead.
McMann's solo home run, his fourth of the season and the 13th in his career, gave ONU a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Sunday when they entertain Oberlin at Wander Field in a non-conference battle at 1 pm.
