ANGOLA, Ind. — The Ohio Northern baseball team dropped a tight 2-1 pitcher's dual at Trine (Ind.) on Sunday afternoon at Jannen Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 7-7 overall, while the Thunder improve to 6-5.
Three Ohio Northern pitchers limited TU to just five hits and unearned runs in the second and seventh innings.
But that was enough for the hosts to grab the win as ONU managed only four hits and a single run in the top of the fourth.
Freshman Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored Northern's run on an RBI ground out by freshman Chayten Overholt (Delphos/Lincolnview).
Junior Josh Mohr (Oregon/Clay) allowed only five hits and an unearned run in 6.0 innings of work and junior Scott Beaton (Novi, Mich.) retired all six batters he faced in two innings of relief.
Junior Tommy Fleser (Sunbury/Big Walnut) took took the loss in relief to fall to 0-2 after he walked the bases loaded to start the bottom of the seventh.
Beaton came on in relief and TU scored on a fielding error, but Beaton got a double play and a ground out to limit the damage to only one run.
But ONU would not be able to plate the equalizer in the eighth of ninth innings and the Thunder would hang on for the win.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday with a 5 pm game at Denison and will open the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday with a 4 pm contest against Thomas More (Ky.) at Wander Field.
