ADA — Sophomore Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) and junior T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) led the Ohio Northern baseball team as it won the first game of a twinbill at Wilmington 5-2, before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
The Polar Bears move to 12-13 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Quakers move to 6-19, 2-6.
Klinehoffer led ONU at the plate in the first contest as he went 3-for-6 and added an RBI and run scored.
Juniors Jason Burkett (Maumee) and Jordan Bostater (Bryan) each added two hits, while senior Kyle Schlade (Hamilton/Talawanda) added two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Austin Frey (Peoria, Az./Sunrise Mountain) earned the victory on the mound for Northern and improved to 1-2 on the season as he went nine innings and struck out four batters.
Storer earned his OAC-leading seventh save of the season for the Polar Bears.
The junior is now tied for third nationally with seven saves this season.
After Wilmington took a 2-0 lead early in the first contest, the Polar Bear bats would come alive in the sixth inning.
After Klinehoffer got on base with a single and eventually got in scoring position on third base, Bostater would hit an RBI double up the middle to pull Northern within 2-1.
With senior Devin Carr (Newark/Licking Valley), Burkett and junior Dan Barna (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) all on base in the top of the ninth inning, Carr was able to score the tying run on a wild pitch by the WC pitcher.
From there, Northern would use a 3-run 10th frame to complete the 5-2 victory.
Burkett, Schlade and sophomore Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) all scored in the inning.
In the second contest Wilmington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings.
The Polar Bears would begin to rally in the top of the sixth as freshman Phil Buckingham (Wayne/Elmwood) and Thomas scored on a 2-RBI double from Burkett to pull ONU with 3-2.
Northern would threaten in the top of the ninth inning before a defensive double play proved to seal the game.
The Polar Bears return to action Saturday afternoon as they host Muskingum at Wander Field in double header action.
