Shenefield and Mohr lead Baseball in 5-3 victory over area-rival Defiance

DEFIANCE — Junior Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) and freshman Josh Mohr (Oregon/Clay) led the Ohio Northern baseball team as it defeated Defiance 5-3 Wednesday afternoon in Defiance.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-10 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-12.
Shenefield went 3-for-4 from the plate and added an RBI to lead Northern offensively in the victory.
Mohr earned the victory on the mound for Northern after striking out four batters and only allowing four hits in seven innings of work.
After three scoreless innings, Defiance took a 2-0 lead in bottom of the fourth inning to open to game up.
Northern would answer with two runs in the top of the fifth inning as junior Dan Barna (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) grounded out to second base and plated junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor).
On the ensuing at bat, junior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) would hit an RBI single to right field to bring junior Jason Burkett (Maumee) home and even the game at 2-2.
After the Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, ONU would tack on two runs in the top of the seventh to take its first lead of the contest.
With Barna and sophomore Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) on base, sophomore Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) would hit an RBI single to left field to plate Barna and tie the game at 3-3.
After a single by freshman Phil Buckingham (Wayne/Elmwood) loaded the bases, Shenefield would single to left field and plate Thomas to give Northern the 4-3 advantage.
Kasberg would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as Barna would drive him home to seal the 5-3 victory.
Junior T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) earned his team-leading fifth save of the season in the victory.
The Polar Bears return to action Saturday as they travel to John Carroll to take on the Blue Streaks in a double header at 1 pm.
