Baseball drops 12-11 decision to Trine (Ind.)

ANGOLA, Ind. — The Ohio Northern baseball team fell to Trine (Ind.) 12-11 on Tuesday evening at Jannen Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 8-6 overall, while the Thunder move to 6-3.
Junior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) led the Polar Bear offense at the plate as he went 4-for-6 and added two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomores Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) and Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) each added three hits and three runs scored for ONU.
Freshman Phil Buckingham (Wayne/Elmwood) was 2-for-4 from the plate with a team-high three RBI.
Northern got on the board early in the top of the first as junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) grounded out to the shortstop and plated Klinehoffer for the first score of the game.
Thomas would score on the ensuing at bat as Buckingham singled to left field.
Trine was able to even the score in the bottom of the first to make it 2-2 heading into the second inning.
The Polar Bears would add five runs to the board in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead as Klinehoffer, Kasberg, Thomas, Buckingham and Bostater each scored.
After a Buckingham double in top of the third plated Thomas, the Thunder would score the contests next four runs to close the gap to 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
After consecutive scoreless innings, Northern added three runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 11-6.
Klinehoffer and junior Dan Barna (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) each scored on an error before an RBI double to right center field by Bostater plated Kasberg.
Trine scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the contest at 11-11.
The Polar Bears would threaten in the top of the ninth before a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Trine to a 12-11 victory.
Northern returns to action Thursday evening and opens its home schedule and welcomes Anderson (Ind.) to Wander Field at 4 p.m.
