AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Ohio Northern baseball team opened its 2017 season with a 13-3, 3-2 sweep of Grove City (Pa.) on Saturday at Lake Myrtle Park.
Junior Jason Burkett (Maumee) and sophomore Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) each had five base hits on the day to lead the Ohio Northern (2-0) offense.
Burkett also added a solo home run for the Polar Bears.
Juniors Jordan Bostater (Bryan) and Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) added four hits apiece for ONU.
In Game 1, the Polar Bears pounded out 20 base hits and senior Zach Maier (Huntsville/Indian Lake) pitched six solid innings in the 13-3 victory.
A 5-run second inning, ignited by a solo home run by Burkett, gave Ohio Northern an early 6-0 lead.
In Game 2, Burkett's 2-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth scored junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) with the winning run in the 3-2 victory.
Junior All-American T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) pitched a scoreless eighth to record the win on the mound for ONU.
The Polar Bears will continue their spring break trip on Sunday with a 1 pm double header against Bridgewater (Va.)
