TIFFIN — The No. 20-ranked Ohio Northern baseball team concluded its regular season with a double header split at No. 6-ranked Heidelberg Saturday afternoon falling in Game 1, 8-1 and winning Game 2, 5-4 at Peaceful Valley.
The Polar Bears move to 30-9 overall, 12-6 Ohio Athletic Conference, while Heidelberg moves to 29-10, 14-4.
The Polar Bears finished in a 4-way tie for second place in the OAC regular season standings with No. 9-ranked Baldwin Wallace, John Carroll and Marietta.
The four teams all tied each other head-to-head and ONU lost the next tiebreaker, which was run differential for each of the four teams in all 18 OAC regular season games, and will not make the OAC Tournament.
Senior Dan Belliveau led the #20-ranked Polar Bears in the double header as he drove in the games winning run in the 5-4 game 2 victory.
Heidelberg jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game 1, as Derek Hug homered to lead the Student Princes.
HU added one more in the sixth, three in the seventh, and one in the eighth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
In the top of the ninth, ONU threatened the Heidelberg lead as Bellieveau homered to put ONU on the board, 8-1. Northern placed two runners in scoring position later in the inning before Heidelberg pitcher Alex Grove was able to retire the side and secure the 8-1 victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in game 2, Northern freshman Brandon Kasberg was able to capitalize on a Heidelberg error to knot the score at 1-1 in the third.
The Student Princes offense came through once more as they added one more run in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the ONU offense came alive as freshman Dan McMullen hit an RBI single scoring one run and a Heidelberg miscue plated one more for the Polar Bears making the score 4-3.
The next batter for Northern, freshman Hayden Shenefield, hit an RBI single scoring the games tying run.
The Polar Bears claimed its first lead of the contest in the ninth inning as Belliveau hit an RBI double scoring the games winning run.
