GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Ohio Northern baseball team lost a pair of games to DePauw (Ind.) by scores of 10-5 and 13-3 at the Walker Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon.
Ohio Northern falls to 3-8 overall, while the Tigers, who are receiving votes in the D3Baseball.com national poll, improve to 12-2.
ONU was led by Kevin Obarski, who hit a grand slam in the opener and went 2-for-3 with a double in the nightcap.
In the opener, ONU fell behind 3-0, but senior Matt Hampshire hit an RBI single to plate freshman Dan Belliveau and cut the deficit to 3-1.
After a Cory Martin single, Obarski drilled a grand slam to score Martin, Hampshire and senior Eric Yunker, giving Northern a 5-3 advantage.
DePauw scored seven runs over the next five innings, winning 10-5, as Elliot Ross struck out six ONU batters over 7.0 innings to improve to 2-1, while junior Austin Price picked up the loss and moved to 0-1.
The Polar Bears got on the board first in the second inning, when senior Mark Hayes hit an RBI single to drive in Obarski.
The Tigers responded quickly, taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, and adding 11 insurance runs over five innings.
Seniors Matt Holstein and Chad Coward had RBIs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late as DePauw closed out the 13-3 victory.
Sophomore Brian Thomas went 2-for-3 in the second game and senior Justin Good threw a scoreless first inning in his start.
Andy Manson threw 6.0 innings, allowing an unearned run and striking four batters to improve to 3-1, while Bryce Sedio took the loss to fall to 1-1.
The Polar Bears will look to snap their five-game winning streak when they close out the series with DePauw at noon on Sunday.
