Widener (Pa.)
FORT MYERS, Fla - The ONU baseball team got off to poor starts in games against Widener (Pa). and Hiram, which resulted in 14-4 and 12-3 losses at Terry Park at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
In the first contest against Widener, senior Cody Fisher pitched himself into a bases loaded jam, only to appear to get out with no damage in the first inning. But after three consecutive errors, Widener jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.
ONU came back to tie it in the top of the fifth when senior Eric Yunker tripled in three runs, and senior Matt Hampshire drove him in with a single. The Pride would go on to score runs off four different Polar Bear relievers to take the win.
Sophomore Chris Leiby pitched well in relief, but was the tough luck loser.
ONU was outhit 11-10, but the big difference was the four Polar Bear errors that led to seven unearned runs.
Yunker, Hampshire, and junior Cory Martin were all 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game against the Terriers, two errors led to a 6-0 first inning deficit.
Each team had 11 hits, but ONU errors again helped the game get out of hand. For the day, the Polar Bears had nine errors compared to only one for their two opponents.
Ryan Damman took the loss to start the season 0-1 overall.
The team will have a day off before a doubleheader with Finlandia on Wednesday; the first pitch is set for 9 a.m.
