ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to John Carroll at Wander Field on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
With the 9-0 and 5-2 wins, the Blue Streaks improve to 18-18 (11-7 OAC), while ONU finishes the season 19-19 (4-14 OAC).
Sophomore Austin Price (Tiffin/Columbian) threw his fourth complete game of the year and freshman Josh Murphy (Kettering Fairmont) reached base three times to lead ONU.
In the opener, John Carroll's Tom Schaberl threw a complete game one-hit shutout, striking out eight without any walks over 7.0 innings.
Sophomore Kevin Obarski (Powell/Bishop Watterson) recorded the only hit for ONU, a one-out double in the bottom of the third.
JCU's offense, though, was attacking from the get-go. The Blue Streaks tallied single runs in the third and sixth innings, also adding four in the fifth and three more on an Aaron Miller home run in the eighth to make it a 9-0 game.
In the second game, John Carroll once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring runs in the third and seventh innings to take a 2-0 advantage.
ONU answered back in the bottom half of the seventh to even the game at 2-2.
After a leadoff double by Murphy, junior Mark Hayes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) laid down a sacrifice bunt, reaching second on a throwing error that also scored Murphy.
Following a sacrifice bunt by senior Adam Yunker (Holland/Toledo Christian) and a walk by senior Mike Hoelzel (Canfield), junior Eric Yunker (Holland/Toledo Christian) laid down a squeeze bunt to score Hayes.
John Carroll utilized a double and RBI single to retake the lead in the top of the eighth, before scoring two more runs in the ninth to move the score to 5-2.
Eric Yunker and junior Matt Hampshire (Lima/Elida) each singled in the bottom of the ninth, but JCU's Doug Finley closed out the game to pick up his fourth save.
Sophomore Austin Price (Tiffin/Columbian) received the loss to fall to 3-6 despite throwing a complete game, striking out seven batters over 9.0 innings.
