MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Polar Bear baseball team picked up its second win Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Alma (Mich.) in Day 2 of the Ripken Experience DIII week in Myrtle Beach, S.
Junior Justin Good earned his first win of the season as Northern moves to 2-0 overall. The Scots' Anthony Derrer takes the loss and his team moves to 1-1 for the season.
Scoreless through five innings, the Polar Bears' run was set up following an Eric Yunker single followed by his first stolen base of the season. Two batters later, sophomore Cory Martin batted Yunker in on a single to give the Polar Bears the 1-0 lead.
In the eighth, senior Adam Yunker reached after being hit by a pitch then advanced to second on a balk. Josh Murphy's sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third to set up a single and the RBI for the other Yunker.
ONU would continue to fend off the Scots, allowing just one hit in the last two innings.
Eric Yunker finished 2 for 4 with one run batted in and tallying one stolen base in two attempts.
Good seven strikeouts and allowed only six hits in eight innings of work.
"We found a way to win today; we had strong pitching outings by Good then by [Shane] Parks but we didn't really swing it the way we wanted," says head coach Justin Bergman. "I give credit to Alma for keeping us on our toes by switching things up. We need to do better making in-game adjustments at the plate."
ONU will get a chance to make those adjustments tomorrow, March 2, for the third game of its spring break trip against face Johnson & Wales (R.I.). The contest is set for a 2 p.m. start.
